Where Can You Find Peace?

The world today seems to be getting busier and busier…people rushing to work, bringing their kids to school and sporting events, shopping, visiting the gym, etc. It’s amazing to think that even though technology has supposedly made our world a simpler and easier place to live in, most of us just can’t seem to find the time during our busy day spend some peaceful and quiet time for ourselves? So, what is “peace” to you? Everyone has their perception of what Peace might be. Today’s story is an excellent illustration of what real peace really should be.

What is Peace to You?

Long ago a king sought the perfect picture of peace. Not finding one that satisfied him, he announced a contest to produce this masterpiece. The challenge stirred the imagination of artists everywhere, and paintings arrived from far and wide. Finally the great day of revelation arrived. The king uncovered one peaceful scene after another, while the viewers clapped and cheered.

The tensions grew. Only two pictures remained veiled.

As the king pulled the cover from one, a hush fell over the crowd.

A mirror-smooth lake reflected lacy, green birches under the soft blush of the evening sky. Along the grassy shore, a flock of sheep grazed undisturbed. Surely this was the winner.

The man with the vision uncovered the second painting himself, and the crowd gasped in surprise. Could this be peace?

A tumultuous waterfall cascaded down a rocky precipice; the crowd could almost feel its cold, penetrating spray. Stormy-gray clouds threatened to explode with lightning, wind and rain. In the midst of the thundering noises and bitter chill, a spindly tree clung to the rocks at the edge of the falls. One of its branches reached out in front of the torrential waters as if foolishly seeking to experience its full power.

A little bird had built a nest in the elbow of that branch. Content and undisturbed in her stormy surroundings, she rested on her eggs. With her eyes closed and her wings ready to cover her little ones, she manifested peace that transcends all earthly turmoil.

Which picture do you think won the prize?
The king chose the second picture.
Do you know why?
“Because,” explained the king, “Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work.  Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”

Good Bye Mom.

Throughout everyone’s lifetime, there are instances where people take advantage of other people’s kindness in a negative way. The following story is an example of this type of behavior…even though it is done in a comical way!

Goodbye Mom!

A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him.

"Pardon me," she said, "I'm sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It's just that you look just like my son, who just died recently."

"I'm very sorry," replied the young man, "is there anything I can do for you?"
"Yes," she said, "As I'm leaving, can you say 'Good bye, Mother!' ?  It would make me feel so much better."

"Sure," answered the young man.

As the old woman was leaving, he called out, "Goodbye, Mother!"

As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50.

"How can that be?" he asked, "I only purchased a few things!"

"Your mother said that you would pay for her," said the clerk.

The Old Man and His Garden

Every once in a while, people will come across stories that make them smile and make them think, “That was pretty cool.” Such is the case in today’s story. It is a story of an old man and his tomato garden. I hope it brings a smile to your face and a little joy to your life.

The Old Man and His Garden
An old Italian gentleman lived alone in New Jersey. He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard and dry. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. So, one day, the old man decided to write a letter to his son and described his predicament.

“Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty sad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I am just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know that if you were here my troubles would be over. I know that you would be happy to dig the plot for me…like in the old days.
Love,
Papa”

A few days later he received a letter from his son.

“Dear Papa,
Don’t dig up that garden! That’s where the bodies are buried!
Love,
Vinnie”

At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left.

That same day the old man received another letter from his son.

“Dear Papa,
Go ahead and plant your tomatoes now. That’s the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love you,
Vinnie”
