The London Olympics 2012 have begun as in the opening ceremony has taken place! All the Olympic fans are in a frenzy, some simply to see their favorite player or team win, and other merely to enjoy the festivities in the wake of the Olympics. Judging by the hype that the 2012 Olympics have created, I thought, why not to do an article that enlightens all the Olympic fans with some of the lesser known facts about their favorite sporting season and this here we are!

London the first city to host the Olympics for three times
Although it remains a certified fact that America has hosted the Olympics four times but as a city, London is the first ever to host the Olympics for a total of three times!

The expense on the Olympics
The estimated cost of the Olympics is almost $15 billion which is an increase of nearly 4 times from the last time they were hosted. The amazing thing is that the contingency fund that is set up for unexpected expenses was set at 2.7 billion pounds.

Adidas and Nike to sponsor apparel
I am sure most of you know that Adidas is the official sponsor for the apparel for this year’s Olympics but one can always see Nike being featured very heavily which is odd because in one of its advertisements, Nike actually makes fun of the Olympics!

Spice Girls at the concluding ceremony
It is being heavily anticipated that a reunion of the Spice girls might be witnessed at the concluding ceremony of the Olympics where the mayor of the hosting country hands over the games to the mayor of the city that will be hosting the games next time round!

Number of viewers
According to a rough but accurate estimate, no less than almost 4 billion people would tune in to their TV sets to watch the Olympics. This amounts to more than half the world that will be viewing the games!

Media Coverage
The number of media personnel that will be covering the event will be almost 20,000 in number for whom, an area equivalent to six full size football fields has been arranged. The International Broadcast Center will house them.

The Green Stadium
The London Olympic stadium that will be used for the Olympics has to be the biggest stadium ever built; utilizing steel tubing that has been recycled from old gas pipelines. Talk about going green!

Power “Puff” Girls
This is the first time ever that every participating country has at least one female athlete on board which is an achievement in itself!

The Tempest
It is now obvious that the opening ceremony was based upon “The Tempest” by Shakespeare.

Expense cannot be recovered
According to a statistical report, London will never be able to recover the money spent on the Olympics!
